Data Centres
Data centre energy audits focused on cooling efficiency and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
Where energy usually goes
Illustration
- Cooling and airflow management
- UPS and power-distribution losses
- PUE tracking
Systems 2R audits here
- Transformer (utility intake) · where the building takes power from the grid
- Main switchboard (MSB) · distributes power to the whole building
- Power logger · logs kW, kWh and power factor over days: Meatrol Mi550 / Fluke 430 Series II
- Load profile · the logged data shows when and where energy is used
- Sub-boards · feed each area or system, measured one by one
- Loads · chillers, motors, lighting: where the energy ends up
Illustration of typical systems, not a client's plant.
- Cooling tower · rejects the chiller's heat outdoors
- Chiller · makes the chilled water for air-conditioning, often the biggest single electrical load
- Condenser water pump · circulates water between the chiller and the cooling tower
- Chilled water pump · sends chilled water to the air handlers; a VSD lets it follow the load
- Air handling unit (AHU) · blows air across the chilled-water coil and into the building
- Ultrasonic flow meter · clamped on the chilled-water pipe to measure flow and cooling load (RT)
- Power logger · logs kW, kWh and power factor over days: Meatrol Mi550 / Fluke 430 Series II
